Ramesh agrawal

He has already won few lawsuits & few are pending in courts against the land grabbers & mining mafia in Chhattisgarh. For standing up against these mafia, including big corporate ones, he was attacked & even shot at in his legs, which has left him crippled for life. Ramesh Agrawal, a one man army, relentlessly educates the villagers in standing up against these mafias to safeguard the environment. For all of his work in the area of environment protection, he has been awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize, also called as "Green Nobel" in 2014 in San Francisco., US.

SavitriBai Phule

Born in the days when Patriarchal Hindu Orthodox society disliked women emancipation to the core, un-touchability was it peak & widows were not allowed to remarry, It was Savitribai who took the initiative of teaching young girls of all age / class / caste & went on to become the first female teacher of the first women school. Wife of legendry Social reformer Jyotiba Phule, She with her husband's full & constant support went on to open many women schools in those days but not before completing her own education. She also headed the women section of Satya Shodhak Samaj founded by her husband, Jyotiba Phule in 1873. Satya Shodhak Samaj preached rationality rather than the religious Caste system.


Ajeet Singh

Ajeet Singh's name doesn't need any introduction, atleast, in holy city of Benaras. In 1991 Ajeet started his mission, Guria, with adoption of 3 children of a woman in prostitution. Guria, since then, has gone leaps & bounds & fought against sexual exploitation of not just the women but also Children. Areas of concern & work of Guria is in the field of finding the root cause for prostitution, poverty & inequality & working towards its elimination in the chosen areas. Dr Sunitha Krishnan

A lady who herself has a harrowing tale to narrate about the unfortunate event that changed her life instead she picked up the battle & fought with this indifferent society to come winner at the end. Born in 1969, she is a social activist and chief functionary, co-founder of Prajwala, an institution that fights against trafficking & helps rehabilitate trafficked women & children. The organization also helps pay for the education of around five thousand children infected with HIV/AIDS in Andhra Pradesh. Prajwala's second generation prevention program operates thru 17 transition centres and has served several thousand children of prostitute mothers. The NGO's strategy is to remove women from brothels, giving them career opportunities & their children education. During her fight so far, she has been beaten & bruised but never has she left the battle mid-way. Dr Krishnan has been awarded with Godfrey-Phillips Bravery Amodini award, Diller-von Furstenberg award, Living Legend award by Human Symphony Foundation in 2013 to name a few besides many other.

Dr. Binayak Sen

A Paediatrician by profession, Dr Binayak Sen is educated from Christian Medical College, Vellore. He started working for the poor to extend medical facility during his early days in medicine, championed the cause of rural poor especially in remotest places that inhabits the Adivasis. Later he also turned into a human rights activist & is a strong opponent of Salwa Judum. While his views have been strong against the Maoists for their violent methods, he equally puts the governments on the dock for not doing enough for the welfare of the rural tribals. He was convicted by a local court for Life imprisonment on sedition charges but was later granted bail by the Supreme Court of India. He currently serves as one of 40 member strong steering committee on Health of Planning commission of Government of India. He also serves as the National Vice President of PUCL, Peoples Union for Civil Liberties.

Martin Macwan

A Law Graduate & founder of Navsarjan, a NGO working relentlessly for the empowerment of Dalits in the state of Gujarat through its 3000 branches. Prior to founding Navsarjan, Martin was working at the Behavioural Science Centre at Ahmedabad. It was the murder of some Dalit villagers in 1986 at the hand of Upper caste men at Golana village, where Martin was working for another organization in a land rights campaign, that changed the course & direction of his thoughts & future career. This led Martin to establish Navsarjan that helps many Dalits across Gujarat in bringing them to the mainstream. Martin was awarded with Robert F Kennedy Human Rights award in 2000 & Gleitsman Foundation's Activist of the Year award in 2001.

Binalakshmi Nepram

Hailing from Manipur, Binalakshmi Nepram, has authored 3 books on disarmament, a thought that aroused from the impact of gun violence on women in Manipur. She is the co-founder of Control Arms foundation of India & founder of Manipur Women Gun Survivor Network. The network provides legal, financial & medical assistance to the affected women as most of them come from financially poor background. She has represented India on various UN meetings to discuss disarmament. She was conferred the CNN-IBN Real Hero award in 2011. She studied from JNU, New Delhi.

Aruna Roy

Aruna Roy is a retired Civil servant. Her interest in the social emancipation of people led her to leave the civil services & work for the cause of the deprived. Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan was the first organization she founded along with the local people in central Rajasthan in 1990 for peasants & workers. The primary thought was to provide justice to the poor & bring transparency. It was this thought that led her, along with colleagues having similar thoughts in NCPRI (National Compaign for People's Right to Information) founded in 1996, for composition & passing of the "Right to Information" act thru a diligent process. Aruna Roy was a member of the NAC (National Advisory Council) set up by Congress President Sonia Gandhi & was instrumental in proposing many reformative schemes however she willingly decided to dis-continue with NAC in 2013 upon termination of her term. She was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership in the year 2000 & Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for Excellence in Public Administration, Academics & Management in 2010.

Dr Sandeep Pandey

An Alumns of IIT BHU, Sandeep is focussing his effort on Right to Information & people's participation in rooting out Corruption to improve Governance through ASHA Trust hence creating a platform for Social & Political reforms.  He leads the National Alliance of People's movement, an alliance of various Social organizations across Indian states. His Primary goal is to empower people thru co-operation instead of competition. Besides he also co-founded "ASHA for Education" with Dr Deepak Gupta & Mr. VJP Srivatsavoy. Sandeep was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Emergent Leadership.

Medha Patkar

Medha Patkar needs no introduction. An alumni of TATA Institute of Social Sciences, Medha Patkar became a famous house hold name after her active & highly aggressive participation during the Narmada Bachao Andolan. Although the Supreme Court came down heavily upon her NGO for providing some distorted facts, she is still a ray of hope for many displaced people. She also played an active role during the Singur issue where TATA motors had decided to set up its NANO production unit. Later it was reported that various local people had approached the company citing they were misled by the activists although no specific names were provided. She has won many National & International awards for her work, key being, Green Ribbon Award for best international political campaigner by BBC , Human Rights Defender Award by Amnesty International, Major Archbishop Cyril Mar Baselios Award for championing the cause of poor & Goldman Environment Prize. She is also the founding member of NAPM.

Chittaroopa Palit

Born in 1964, Chittaroopa Palit is an Economics Graduate from Delhi University & a Post Graduate from IRMA, Anand. She actively works for the rehabilitation of the farming community affected by dam projects made on Narmada river across Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh & Maharashtra. She was one of the catalysts during the 2012 Jal Satyagraha protest by farmers in neck deep waters at Khandva village of Madhya Pradesh demanding the water levels to be lowered in the Omkareshwar Dam. Government had to finally give in after several round of discussions with the protesting farmers.
