Rajeev Suri

Recently appointed as the CEO of Finnish mobile manufacturer company Nokia, Rajeev Suri is an Electronics & Telecommunications Engineer from Manipal Institute of Technology. Prior to taking over the current role in April 2014, Rajeev was CEO of Nokia Siemens Network (NSN) since Oct 2009 & turned around the entire business. Rajeev lives in Finland with his wife & 2 kids.

V Shankar

A Graduate of Loyola College, Chennai & a Post Graduate from IIM Bangalore, V Shankar became the CEO of Standard Chartered Bank in 2010. He became a board member in 2012. He is based out of Dubai. Before joining SC Bank, he was associates with Bank of America for around 20 years. Shankar is also a non-executive director in many a Companies.

MA Yusuffali

Undoubtedly one of the most famous Indians in the Gulf region, MA Yusuffali, runs a chain of Retail Stores Globally under the banner of EMKE group. As Managing director of the EMKE group, he has spread the retail operations across 24 countries with 106 stores. He hails from Kerala & has also opened its first flagship store, the Lulu Store, at Kochi in Mar 2013 & has currently presence across at least 7 Indian cities. He also, to his credit, has a record to provide jobs to maximum numbers of Indian outside of India.

Dr Amar Gopal Bose

An Electrical engineer by education & an alumni of MIT, Dr Bose, founded Bose corporation in 1964 after he got highly disappointed by a stereo system that he had bought in the US which didn't perform good enough even after having great specifications. Dr Bose's philosophy revolved around a greater level of research to provide better products in the sound systems. He taught at MIT for over 45 years & MIT plays an incredible role in the overall success of Bose corporation. He died in July 2013.

Harish Manwani

An alumni of Mumbai University & Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Harish Manwani, joined Unilever in 1976. He held several key positions within the company before taking over as the COO in June 2011. He is also the non executive chairman of Hindustan Unilever.

 

Shantanu Narayen

Prior to taking over as the CEO of Adobe, Shantanu Narayen served as the President & COO of the very same company. He is an alumni of Osmania University, University of California & Bowling Green University where he completed his Masters in Science. He started his with Apple Inc & later co-founded Pictra before moving to Adobe. He was also appointed by Barack Obama to his Advisory Management Board (PAMB) in 2011.

Ajit Jain

An IIT Kharagpur & Harvard alumni, Ajit Jain is supposedly tipped to be the most probable successor to Billionaire Warren Buffet. Prior to Berkshire, Ajit Jain worked in McKinsey & IBM & moved to Berkshire around 1985.

 

Rakesh Kapoor

An alumni of BITS, Pilani & XLRI, Jamshedpur, Rakesh Kapoor joined RB in 1987 where he had held various positions before taking over as the CEO of this giant Consumer Goods company in the Sep 2011. Rakesh is a Chemical Engineer & holds Masters in management.

 

Anshu Jain

Jaipur born Anshu Jain, a Swiss National now, took over as the co-CEO of Deutsche Bank in May 2012. One of his key objectives is to make Deutsche as one of the Top 14 banking firms in the world. He is an Economics Graduate from SRCC, New Delhi & MBA from University of Massachusetts.

 

Lakshmi Niwas Mittal

One of richest (Indians) in the world, Lakshmi Mittal, is a steel magnate who unlike many other businessmen erected his empire outside of India. He is also in the top 50 list of the most powerful man on the planet as of today. Richest in UK & Second richest in Europe, Lakshmi, was born in Rajasthan. He is a Graduate in Commerce from St. Xavier's College, Calcutta. 

 

Srichand & Gopichand Hinduja

Hinduja group has interests in many areas including Heavy motors (Ashok Leyland), Oil & Refinery, Banking (IndusInd Bank) amongst others. Starting their operations from Mumbai, Hinduja brothers migrated to London, UK in the year 1979. Hinduja brothers were also charged by CBI for paying kickbacks in the Bofors scandal to Indian politicians & executives. The trial went on for 14 years but they were finally exonerated of all charges in 2005.

Kirit Pathak

With operations in over 40 countries as of today, Patak Group was started as a small Indian food joint by LG Patak in 1957 selling authentic indian food from his home in London. The Patak group is now managed by Kirit Pathak, his son, who happens to be Chairman of the company after having sold out to Associates British Foods in 2007 for estimated £200mn while Anjali Pathak, Kirit's daughter is the Culinary Ambassador for the company. The takeover doesn't hold for the Patak business & Brand in India though.

Indira Nooyi

Indira Nooyi is probably the one & only businesswomen from India to be leading such a giant multinational. She did her Graduation from Madras Christian College, Madras while her Post Graduation from IIM, Calcutta. Prior to taking this position, Indira held the position of CFO in the company. She hails from Chennai.

 

Sanjay Jha

Sanjay is non-arguably one of the highest paid CEO's in the world today. Prior to taking up this position, Sanjay was co CEO of Motorola Inc. He earned his Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering from Scotland while his PhD from England. Before moving to Motorola, Sanjay was COO for Qualcomm. Sanjay stepped down as CEO in 2012 from Motorola Mobility after Google acquired it.

 

Ajaypal Singh Banga

An alumni of St. Stephens New Delhi & IIM Ahmedabad, Ajay Banga started his career with Nestle. Prior to joining MasterCard, Ajay was CEO of Citi Group Asia Pacific. He also worked at PepsiCo for around 2 years. Ajay is also the Chairman of US India Business Council (USIBC) besides many other decorated positions that he holds today.

 

Vikram Pandit

Born in Nagpur, Vikram is probably one of the best leading bankers in the world today with having shown the world the art to bring out Citigroup out of the recession back into profitability. Vikram is a Post Graduate in Electrical Engineering from a Columbia university & earned his Phd too from the same university. Also probably the only CEO in the world who told his board for a $1 salary / year until his company returned to profitability. Vikram stepped down as CEO in Oct '2012, a day after Citi announced solid Quarterly results, by Chairman Michael O'Neill, who, it is believed, had been working behind the scene for Pandit's removal by Michael Corbat, for some months.

Sabeer Bhatia

Sabeer is the one of the pioneers in web email services that has revolutionized the world today. Born in Chandigarh, Sabeer, went to US to earn his Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from California Institute of Technology. He further earned his Master’s in the same field from Stanford. Till today Hotmail remains the largest email provider.

 

Vinod Khosla

After co-founding the company, Vinod remained as its first Chairman & CEO until 1984. Born in New Delhi, Vinod received his Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from IIT Delhi & Masters in Biomedical Engineering. He is also a MBA from Stanford. Today he runs a venture capitalist firm & has invested in a lot of Social entrepreneurial ventures, especially in India. 

Deven Sharma

Until recently Deven held the position of the President, S&P. Born in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, Deven earned his Graduation from BIT Mesra, Ranchi. He achieved PhD in Business management from Ohio State University. Deven was known to have taken a strong stance against US for its increasing debt in the global market & eventually leading to a downgrade of America's international Credit rating from AAA. Deven Sharma stepped down as President in Sep 2011.

Rajat Gupta

Apart from ISB, he has co-founded few other firms. Rajat served as CEO of Mckinsey & Company for nearly a decade. He has served on many a company boards including Goldman Sachs, P&G, Harvard, MIT amongst others. He was charged with insider trading by USSEC in 2011. Although the charges were dropped by the Securities & Exchange Commission within few months of filing, he surrendered to FBI on the 26th Oct 2011 for a fair trial. US have pressed insider trading charges against him. This was after his close billionaire friend Raja Rajratnam was sentenced to 11 years prison sentence on the similar charges earlier this year. Rajat was convicted & sentenced for 2 years in prison to start Jan 2013. Days before the Judge sentenced Rajat, many renowned businessmen, Socialities, Philanthropists wrote to the Judge to consider less to no sentencing owing to Rajat's immense contribution to the Social Sector & Charity work.  

Sant Singh Chatwal

Owner of Bombay Palace chain of restaurants & Hampshire Hotels & Resorts. He had migrated from India in the year 1967 to Ethiopia where he first owned a restaurant before moving to Canada & then to US.

 

Dr Rangaswamy Srinivasan

Dr Srinivasan, an Indian-American Scientist discovered this while working at IBM, which is now famously called as Lasik Eye Surgery. In a family full of Scientists, he is the only Indian origin scientist to be celebrated in the US National Inventors Hall of Fame, Ohio & was recently named to be awarded with "National Medal for Technology & Innovation", by US President Obama.

 

Kalpana Chawla

Kalpana was born in India's Karnal district of Haryana. She first made the maiden flight in 1997 & subsequently later in 2003. It was in Feb 2003 while returning that the space shuttle Columbia crashed & broke into pieces while returning to earth's atmosphere killing all members. In her respect, Indian meteorological series of satellites, METSET, were re-named as Kalpana.

 

Sunita Williams

Part of Expedition 14 & 15 team, Sunita Williams, scores the longest space travel amongst all women Space travellers. She also served as NASA's Deputy Chief of Astronaut office. Her first maiden travel to space was in 2006 thru space shuttle Discovery.

 

Sir Seewoosagar Ramgoolam

Regarded as Father of the nation, Sir Seewoosagar was the first Chief Minister, Prime Minister & then the 6th Governor general of Mauritius. It was in 1968 that he led Mauritius to independence from UK. His ancestary is from Bihar.

 

Sir Anerood Jugnauth

Anerood Jagnauth, had been for 16 years, the Prime Minister of Mauritius. He served as the President of Mauritius from 2003 until 2012. He was Knighted in 1988. His ancestors were from Bihar.

 

Rajkeswur (Kailash) Purryag

Rajkeswur Purryag, has been the President since July 2012. He belongs to Labout Party & his ancestors were from Wajidpur village in Patna district of Bihar.

 

 

SR Nathan

A Tamilian by descent, he is the longest serving President of Singapore. Nathan began his career as a Singapore Civil Servant. He has been President twice; once in 1999 & then in 2005. He demited office in 2011.

 

Kamla Persad Bissessar

She is the 7th prime minister of Republic of T&T. She was sworn in 2010 as PM & is the first female to hold this position. Her great grandfather originally hailed from village Bhelupur of Buxar district of Bihar. 

 

Bharrat Jagdeo

Prior to becoming the President in 2009, he served as the Finance minister. He was president until Dec 2011. He was also the Prime minister for just 2 days from 9th until 11th Aug 1999 & President pro tempore of the Union of South American Nations. Bharrat Jandeo ancestors were from Uttar Pradesh.

Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam

He is the incumbent Prime Minister. Prior to this, he has served twice as PM. A medical doctor by education, he completed his Masters in Law from London School of Economics. He is son of Sir Seewoosagar Ramgoolam.

 

Dr Ram Baran Yadav

A Doctor by education, he completed his MBBS from Calcutta Medical College followed with PG from the School of Tropical medicine, Chandigarh. He was sworn in on 23rd July 2008.

 

 

Keith Vaz

Named as one of the most influential Indians in the UK, Keith is a Labour Party MP from Leicester East. Keith was a practicing Solicitor before jumping into Political life. He is the longest serving Asian MP in the UK & is Chairman of Home Affairs Committee since 2007.

Bobby Jindal

Bobby Jindal is a US Republican party member & the current Governor of Louisiana. He was elected for 2nd term successfully on 22nd Oct 2011. He was first elected as Governor on the 20th Oct 2007.

 

 

Nikki Haley

Nimrata Nikki Randhawa Haley is popularly known as Nikki Haley. She is a US citizen born to Indian parents who immigrated to US. She also represents the Republican party of US. Haley is the youngest Governor of the US who got elected to the office on the 20th June 2010. Prior to this she represented Lexington County in the South Carolina House of representatives.

Preet Bharara

Named as one of the 100 most Influential people in the world by Times in 2012, Preet serves as one of the grandest success stories of an Indian-American. Preet got highly famous when he started busting the businessmen / stock brokers involved in Insider trading & fraud on Wall Street including hedge fund billionaire Raj Rajaratnam & Rajat Gupta. He is also involved in securing convictions for terrorists like Faisal Shazad who plotted Time Square bombing.

Neal Katyal

Neal Katyal served as the Solicitor general of US from May 2010 to June 2011. He was the lead Counsel for Guantnamo Detainees. He also acted as the National Security adviser from 1997 to 1999. He was awarded the 2004 Pro Bono Award by the National Law Journal.

 

Rajiv Shah

Rajiv was confirmed as the Administrator of USAID on the 24th Dec 2009. He was also announced as the Chief Scientist in May 2009. Prior to this he has also worked in leadership roles of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation & as a Policy Adviser on Al-Gore Presidential Campaign.

 

Vivek Kundra

Vivek served as the 1st Chief Information Officer of the US from 2009 to 2011. Prior to this he served as Chief Technology Officer & Assistant Commerce Secretary at District offices.

 

Nisha Desai Biswal

First South Asian to hold this prestigious position, Nisha was appointed by Barack Obama in July 2013 to head the South Asia bureau. Before taking up this position she was assistant administrator with USAID which is led by Rajiv Shah.

 

Sri Srinivasan

Sri Srinivasan became the first Indian to be sworn as Judge in the US Court of Appeal for District of Columbia circuit. Sri's selection to the esteemed position was cleared unanimously in a 97-0 votes in his favour by the US Senate. With this he also becomes the first South Asian American to be holding such a position. Prior to taking over this position, he was Principal Deputy Solicitor General of US.

Nina Davuluri

She was the first Indian America to be Miss New York & now she also is the first Indian American to be the Miss America. Like her father, she also wants to be a doctor one day. Being Miss America she will serve as the spokesperson for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) during this year as she starts to work with US Department of Education.

Azita raji

An Indian origin philanthropist, who backed Obama's presidential campaign & raised more than $3mn in contributions towards his re-election was nominated to a key post in Obama's administration as member of the President's commission on White House Fellowships.

Azita Raji is a trustee of Barnard College & founding co-chair of Athena Leadership Council of Barnard's Athena College for Leadership studies.

Azita did her MBA in Finance from Columbia University & was a banker at JP Morgan before.
